Terms

What are the terms for buying BrighterMac?

There are two ways to pay: 9,99 € a year, as a subscription that renews automatically until you cancel, or 49 € once, with no renewal at all. On the yearly licence, the boost stops working if the payments stop. Either way you can try the app first, free, and have your money back within 14 days for any reason. There is still no account to create. The app does confirm your licence with our server now and then, and the section after next says exactly what that means before you decide.

Last updated 22 September 2026. These terms are between you and Webkompaniet AS, a company registered in Norway, organisation number 999 529 860, with its registered office in Oslo. They are governed by Norwegian law, and Oslo District Court (Oslo tingrett) is the agreed legal venue; if you are a consumer, the mandatory consumer law of your own country of residence still applies, and you may always bring a case where you live.

What you are paying for

A compiled, code-signed and notarised build of BrighterMac, delivered as a download, for three Macs you personally own. Your purchase sends you a licence key by email; clicking it activates the app. There is no account to create.

The two licences

The annual licence costs 9,99 € and renews itself every year, for the same amount, until you cancel it. You can cancel at any time, from the link in your receipt or by writing to us, and you do not have to tell us why. Cancelling stops the next payment; it does not cut anything short, and the licence runs to the end of the year you have already paid for.

If an annual licence is cancelled or its payment fails, the app stops boosting when the paid year runs out. Nothing is deleted: the app stays installed, your settings stay, and the boost comes back the moment a licence is active again. But the screen goes back to what macOS gives you, and we would rather you read that here than discover it.

The lifetime licence costs 49 € and is paid once. It does not renew, there is nothing to cancel, and no later payment can be asked of you for the app you bought. What it cannot promise is that the app keeps being useful forever — that depends on macOS, and "What we do not promise" below is where we say so plainly.

Both licences are the same app with the same features, cover the same three Macs, and include the updates we ship while they are valid.

The licence check

BrighterMac confirms your licence with our server — once when you first activate it, and every 45 days after that. This happens in the background. You are never asked to log in, and there is no dialog to dismiss.

Between checks the app keeps working offline for up to 180 days, which is meant to cover a long trip, a summer house, a locked-down office network and a laptop that spends a month in a drawer. The first 105 of those days are silent: you see nothing and nothing is asked of you. After that the app starts telling you it has not been able to reach us, so that the day it stops is never a surprise.

If the app cannot reach us for longer than 180 days, the boost stops working until it can. We would rather you read that here than discover it. Nothing is deleted and your key is not revoked — the app unlocks again the moment a check succeeds, and a licence you have paid for stays yours. If our service is the thing that is down, that is our problem to fix and we will not let it cost you the app; write to us and we will sort it out.

The check sends your licence and a one-way pseudonym of the Mac it runs on, and nothing else — not your name, not your email, not anything about how you use the app. The privacy policy sets out what we store and how to have it deleted. The Mac App Store edition does not do any of this: Apple handles the entitlement there and that edition never contacts us.

A licence covers three Macs at a time. Changing machines is a normal thing to do and does not need our permission: activating a fourth Mac automatically removes the one you have used least recently, up to three times in any 30 days. If you need to move more often than that, write to us and we will sort it out — it is a conversation we would rather have than a limit you cannot get past.

The trial

The download on this site is the complete app, free and at full strength for 3 days. The trial starts by itself the first time you open the app — there is nothing to sign up for and no payment details are taken.

When those days are up the app does not lock you out and does not stop: the app keeps boosting part of your screen, and that part gets smaller week by week. You can keep using it in that form for as long as you like, and buying either licence gives you the whole screen back immediately. The trial is recorded in a file on the Mac you started it on, so it is per machine, and the Mac App Store edition has no trial at all.

The licence check in the section above does not apply during the trial. Until you enter a licence key you have bought, the app never contacts our servers and we hold nothing about you at all — not during the first 3 days and not afterwards.

Refunds

Fourteen days, no questions asked, for purchases made directly from us — on either licence. Email us and we will refund the whole amount. You do not need to explain, and we will not try to talk you out of it. Cancelling an annual licence later is not a refund of the year you are in: it stops the renewal, and the licence runs out at the end of the period you paid for.

Purchases made through the Mac App Store are refunded by Apple through Apple's own process, because we never see that transaction and cannot reverse it.

What we do not promise

The app is supplied as it is. We have measured it on one MacBook Pro model and we say so everywhere, including on the compatibility page and in the app's own menu. We do not promise a specific brightness in nits, a specific battery cost or a specific colour accuracy, because we have not measured those things yet.

We do not promise that a future version of macOS will leave the mechanism working. Apple has already broken it once, on the M5 Pro and M5 Max, and we blocked those models rather than sell into a failure. If Apple removes the mechanism entirely, the app stops being useful and there is nothing we can do about it. That is the risk you are taking, and we would rather you knew it before paying than after.

One known limitation, stated here because it belongs in the terms and not only in the FAQ: when the app quits, macOS resets the display's gamma table to your ColorSync profile, which also clears adjustments other apps had made — f.lux and similar. Every app that writes the gamma ramp behaves this way.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to what you paid us. Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer law where you live, and if a term below conflicts with those rights, your rights win.

Acceptable use

Do not redistribute our signed build as though it were yours, do not share your licence key publicly, and do not claim our measurements as your own. Installing the app on the Macs you personally own is exactly what the purchase is for.

Changes

If these terms change, the date at the top changes. A change never applies retroactively to a purchase you already made.
